Urban Agriculture

Greenest City’s gardens and urban agriculture programs offer our diverse community the support, education and space needed to produce locally grown food. The programs build community, expand opportunities and improve participant health.

Our Community Gardens include the HOPE Garden, a 4,000 square foot organic food garden that has animated and tranformed Masaryk Park. The garden brings together individuals, families and agencies in Parkdale that wouldn’t otherwise have access to space for growing food. More than a garden, HOPE is an outdoor community centre where participants have opportunities to make new friends; eat and celebrate the harvest; develop new skills; and share cultures.

The Youth Garden in the Dunn Parkette was created by youth in 2008. The food garden, mural, seating, new trees and related programming contribute to the revitalization of a once neglected corner of Parkdale. All the food grown in the garden by youth is donated to local community kitchens.

We work with and support others in the community grow food. For example, we care for the garden at Parkdale Collegiate in the summer and collaborate with other institutions and owners of private land.

These urban gardens yield over 3,000 lbs of fresh organic produce for the community and engage community members of all ages in learning how to use sustainable, environmentally friendly methods to grow food.

We support local farmers with field trips to their farms and support and promote local farmer’s markets.

We build community knowledge and skills with an extensive series of workshops.
